A plethora of international bodies highlight the need for immediate drastic action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Although maritime transportation is performed in an energy-efficient way, nevertheless its air pollution contribution in recent years is under close examination by the global community. The analysis of measures for reducing greenhouse emissions is very high on the agenda of IMO and of other bodies with regulatory powers. Under the Kyoto Protocol, particular measures to reduce emissions from industrial and other activities are necessary to reduce the projected increase in so-called "greenhouse gases". While shipping has so far been excluded from both Kyoto and the Copenhagen Conference in 2009, it is clear that this era is rapidly approaching to an end. The focus of the analysis of this thesis was firstly to develop and present the trend of emission of air pollutants in the territorial waters of Greece, and secondly to improve the general understanding of the nature and magnitude of emissions from ships as well as the impact and technological possibilities of reduction. The test results indicate a clear upward trend in pollutant derived quantities, which is consistent with results of international studies in national and global scale.
