Abstract
The present essay deals with accidents in greek-flag ships and the importance of education in their reduction for a period of five years and especially from 1998 until 2002. The last years, maritime accidents have attracted the attention of public feeling, but also the shipping countries’ policies. The main causes of the accidents as it results from a worldwide multiannual analysis (1963-1996) are weather conditions 33%, groundings 14%, collisions 12%, fire of any kind 20%, and structural damage 2%, while the rests not ascertained reasons amount in the 19%. Analyzing each category separate, it is realized that if no in all, in most cases the human factor is at least included. This essay refers to the knowledge of shipping science during the ancient years and at the periods before and afterwards the revolution of 1821, that led however to the acquisition of know-how to the next generations with the result of the predominance of greek commercial shipping against much more powerful states in shipping and economy, from 1970 until today.
