This dissertation examines the contribution of the Circular Economy and Reverse Logistics to sustainable resource management and the enhancement of environmental and operational performance. Initially, the fundamental principles of the Circular Economy are analysed, highlighting the transition from the traditional linear “take–make–dispose” model to circular systems of production and consumption. Reverse Logistics are then presented as a critical mechanism enabling the practical implementation of circular strategies through the recovery, reuse, and recycling of materials.
The case study of Nespresso demonstrates the real-world application of Circular Economy principles through a fully integrated recycling system for aluminium coffee capsules. The company has developed a multi-channel collection network—including retail stores, home pick-up services, and the use of modern autonomous parcel lockers—to increase consumer participation. The results indicate that aluminium recovery and the composting of used coffee grounds generate substantial environmental and economic benefits.
The study concludes that adopting circular business practices and effective Reverse Logistics systems can serve as a strategic driver for business development, while simultaneously supporting sustainability goals and reducing environmental impact. Finally, the main challenges and future development opportunities are presented, alongside proposals for further research.
