Abstract

This thesis examines the role of Project Management as a critical success factor in European programmes, with Horizon Europe as its main field of reference. European projects are complex and demanding initiatives that combine scientific excellence, transnational cooperation, strict funding rules, financial monitoring and specific contractual obligations. In this context, effective project management acts as a mechanism that connects the initial idea with successful implementation and the exploitation of results. The thesis analyses the life cycle of a European project, from the understanding of the institutional framework and the different types of action to the planning phase, consortium building, proposal submission, the development of Work Packages, the definition of deliverables and milestones, financial management, risk management, quality assurance and the amendment process. At the same time, it examines the importance of dissemination, communication and exploitation of project results, since the real value of a project is linked to the impact it can generate beyond the end of the funding period. The methodology of the thesis is based on a qualitative bibliographic and analytical approach, using official European sources, regulatory documents, Horizon Europe guides and key principles of Project Management. The analysis shows that the success of a European project depends on the combination of scientific quality, organisational maturity, clear governance and systematic monitoring. Project Management, therefore, emerges as a key tool for transforming a European idea into a functional, reliable and valuable project.
