Artificial Intelligence is playing an increasingly important role in software engineering, introducing new possibilities in the design, development, testing, and maintenance of applications. The purpose of this literature review is to investigate the use of Artificial Intelligence in software development, with an emphasis on its applications, benefits, limitations, and the prospects arising from its integration into the development process. The study examines automated code generation, developer assistance, error detection and correction, and the automation of individual tasks. At the same time, it analyses the impact of these technologies on software productivity and quality, while also considering issues related to reliability, security, intellectual property, professional responsibility, and environmental impact. Particular attention is paid to AI agents, which extend the capabilities of Artificial Intelligence beyond basic assistance with code writing towards the execution of more complex development tasks. The literature review indicates that these technologies can reduce the time required for repetitive tasks and reshape the nature of programmers’ work, without rendering human technical knowledge and judgement unnecessary. On the contrary, evaluating generated code, ensuring its quality and security, and making decisions in complex situations are becoming increasingly important. Overall, the findings demonstrate that Artificial Intelligence is transforming software engineering, while its effective use requires a combination of technological automation, human oversight, and responsible development practices.
