Objective:
The study aims to highlight and evaluate the instruments (Patient-Reported Outcome Measures-PROMs), applied for measuring quality of life in individuals with autoimmune diseases.
Methods:
The study employed the methodology of a systematic literature review, based on the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Through targeted searches across international scientific databases and supplementary sources, seventy-five (75) primary studies, published between 2006 and 2026, were identified and analyzed. The selection of the studies was limited to papers published in English, Greek, or Italian. Due to the substantial heterogeneity of the included studies, regarding their study design, population samples, and assessment tools, a qualitative synthesis was employed for the data analysis. To enhance data interpretation secondary literature was concurrently utilized.
Results:
The study confirmed a significant lack of uniformity among the utilized Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs). Analysis of the selected literature indicated that disease-specific tools frequently demonstrate increased responsiveness in detecting clinical changes in individuals with autoimmune conditions compared to generic instruments. Furthermore, the use of electronic questionnaire formats (e-PROMs) appeared to offer more accurate and continuous monitoring of symptoms. This digital approach effectively minimizes recall bias and enhances the tracking of individual’s clinical disease progression.
Conclusions:
The substantial heterogeneity of the available Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), coupled with the complexity of autoimmune diseases, underscores the critical need for the concurrent use of multiple tools so as to achieve a more comprehensive assessment of patients' quality of life.
Additionally, further developing and standardization of these instruments through cutting-edge technologies, such as artificial intelligence, is important. This is essential for embedding these tools -more deeply- into the clinical management of patients with autoimmune diseases, who experience complex symptoms and severe clinical fluctuations.
