Hospital inventory management is at the heart of numerous challenges involving inadequate planning, product expiration and quality issues, and financial pressure affecting day-to-day operations. The optimal inventory level is one of the basic needs in healthcare facilities as it affects patient care, clinical processes and compliance. With bad planning, hospitals end up with either stockout issues or high levels of inventory and outdated supplies — these situations can disrupt regular activities, increase costs and even cause patient safety problems.
But the financial toll that poor inventory practices cause is also substantial, over and above their operational consequences. Hospitals may experience additional costs due to wasted materials, unnecessary purchase of items on an emergency basis as well as fines related to non‑compliance, which can be a significant burden and reduce resources available for core services. The impact of these inefficiencies was further explored as a potential cause of increasing operational costs, delaying time for treatment or creating compliance risk.
The need for the adoption of more contemporary and automated stock monitoring systems, as well as the implementation of more comprehensive planning procedures, is evident. Improvements of this nature are touted as landmark efforts in tackling the longstanding issue that healthcare organizations must contend with: getting a handle on their inventory.
