This thesis is a thorough study of the UN's migration policy and its actions in the cases of
Greece and Turkey during the period 2015 to date. Migration, as a phenomenon that unfolds
throughout the history of humanity, is a key factor in demographic developments, currently
influencing the population distribution and the "age identity" of states, while at the same
time constituting an issue of internal security, as it disrupts the balance of the labor market,
public order and security, public health and economic prosperity, leading to internal and
interstate conflicts. This reality creates the need to formulate policies that aim at the
economic and social integration and support of immigrants, especially children. Greece, in
particular, has been a transit point for thousands of refugees to Europe since 2015, mainly
from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq, who are moving in search of better living conditions in
Europe.
In this context, the migration issue and the European policies that are being institutionalized
to address it require a comprehensive approach, as at their core they encompass the axes of
human rights, social inequalities and democratic principles, which govern the value systems
of modern European states. The question, therefore, that exists in the European area every
time a migration crisis arises is whether these policies will be common or will they be
adapted to the respective national contexts. On the occasion of the migration crisis
experienced by the Southeastern Mediterranean and specifically examining the cases of
Greece-Turkey from 2015 to the present, the purpose of the work is to highlight the role of
the UN in managing the migration issue in the Mediterranean, through the study of legal
frameworks, provisions and state initiatives.
