This master’s thesis examines the main predictive indicators associated with team
success in the Women’s EuroLeague. The aim of the study is to investigate the statistical
variables that influence the development and outcome of a basketball game, as well as
to identify the factors most strongly related to qualification and overall team
performance in the competition.
The analysis is based on official FIBA data from the 2004–2025 seasons, including
statistical records from 108 different teams participating in the Women’s EuroLeague.
The variables examined include key performance indicators such as points per game,
shooting percentages, rebounds, assists, turnovers, steals, blocks, and the efficiency
rating (EFFPG).
Initially, descriptive statistical analysis and graphical investigation of the data are
conducted through time series plots, scatter plots, and Chernoff Faces. Subsequently,
statistical tests, correlation analyses, logistic and multinomial logistic regression
models, as well as cluster analysis methods (nearest neighbor, Ward, and k-means), are
applied in order to identify the most important factors related to team success and
qualification to the Final 8 stage.
The results indicate that variables such as points per game, two-point shooting
percentage, assists, defensive rebounds, and efficiency rating are positively associated
with team success, while turnovers and personal fouls are negatively related to
performance. Finally, a comparative approach with a similar study concerning the
Men’s EuroLeague is conducted in order to highlight possible similarities and
differences between men’s and women’s European basketball regarding the factors
affecting team success.
