This master’s thesis examines the strategic evolution of multinational corporations in the pharmaceutical sector, with particular emphasis on the role of competition policies and regulatory interventions in shaping their strategic behavior. Initially, the historical context of the development of multinational pharmaceutical companies and the evolution of the global pharmaceutical industry is presented, highlighting the increasing importance of innovation, research and development (R&D), and the protection of intellectual property rights.
Subsequently, the strategic evolution of multinational enterprises is analyzed through distinct phases of development, from early efforts in product differentiation and international expansion to the maturity stage, which is characterized by economies of scale, mergers and acquisitions, as well as the strengthening of innovation as a key factor of competitive advantage. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of patents and intellectual property rights as strategic tools that enable multinational corporations to consolidate and maintain their position in international markets.
Furthermore, the thesis investigates the impact of competition policies and international regulatory frameworks on the strategic behavior of multinational pharmaceutical companies. In this context, the Greek pharmaceutical market is examined as a case study, with emphasis on the national regulatory framework and the clawback and rebate mechanisms, as well as the adaptation strategies adopted by multinational corporations under conditions of increased regulatory pressure. Finally, conclusions are drawn regarding the current prospects and future challenges of the pharmaceutical sector.
