This thesis examines the development and application of digital twins, a relatively new and innovative technological trend that is expected to dominate the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0). Digital Twins demonstrate strong potential and application
prospects in many sectors, including the shipping industry.
The purpose of this research is to highlight the characteristics of the technology, investigate the specificities of its application in relation to the complexity of the shipping industry, and systematically document the required infrastructure.
Through an extensive literature review, the definitions, key components, and the technologies supporting their development are analyzed. At the same time, the selection criteria for these elements are classified with the aim of developing a roadmap for all stakeholders (shipowners, shipyards, fleet managers, etc.).
Furthermore, the technological and operational challenges to their widespread adoption are highlighted.
Finally, current research projects are presented, future prospects and applications are assessed, and recommendations are formulated for the optimal utilization of the technology in maritime applications.
