This study examines the investment strategies of Greek shipowners through the lens of the
maritime cycle theory, focusing on the role of timing, expectations, and managerial experience
in decision-making. By combining theoretical analysis with a qualitative case study
methodology, the research explores both countercyclical and procyclical investment strategies
across different phases of the shipping market. The empirical evidence demonstrates that
investment decisions do not mechanically follow market cycles but are shaped by market
behavior, uncertainty, and strategic judgment. Particular emphasis is placed on fleet
management, timing of asset acquisitions and disposals, and value creation during periods of
market downturns and booms. The findings indicate that success in shipping depends on the
ability to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical experience and on strategic flexibility
in responding to cyclical market fluctuations. Finally, the study contributes to the discussion
on the Greek shipping model and provides insights for future research on maritime investment
behavior.
