This study examines the relationship between the increasing demand for skills
acquisition and economic inequalities in the context of globalization. Contemporary
labor market requirements have transformed the acquisition of skills and qualifications
from a mere competitive advantage— as was the case in the past, when even limited
additional credentials were sufficient to significantly differentiate a candidate— into a
fundamental prerequisite for survival in the labor market, particularly in light of the
technological developments associated with globalization. Despite this, access to
education and training is not equally attainable for all individuals.
To achieve the research objective, primary research was conducted through ten (10)
semi-structured interviews with individuals from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds
and employment situations, all of whom hold at least a tertiary education degree. The
findings indicate that individuals’ financial capacity, along with factors such as social
capital, constitutes a decisive factor in accessing education and training. Although, in
theory, the enhancement of skills could contribute to reducing inequalities, the results
suggest that, in practice, these inequalities tend to widen, highlighting the need for
substantial interventions in the fields of education and training.
In conclusion, the acquisition of skills and qualifications, rather than reducing disparities
among workers, may instead contribute to the emergence of new forms of social
exclusion. Therefore, the relationship between skills and opportunities in the labor
market cannot be considered neutral, but is shaped in direct relation to economic
inequalities.
