This dissertation examines the issue of waste management generated by recreational boats in Greece, with particular emphasis on marinas and, more broadly, on tourist ports as key areas for the implementation of relevant environmental and operational requirements. The topic is especially important in the context of maritime tourism growth and the need to protect the marine environment, particularly in a country such as Greece, with its extensive coastline, strong insular character, and high concentration of recreational boats.
The aim of the study is to outline the current international, European, and national regulatory framework governing waste management from recreational boats, to formulate a reference model for an effective waste management system in marinas, and to investigate the existing situation in Greece. In particular, the dissertation examines the main categories of waste associated with the operation of recreational boats, the obligations arising from the applicable regulatory framework, and the organizational and operational conditions required for their effective implementation.
The methodological approach is based on a literature review, the analysis of institutional and regulatory texts, and a descriptive-comparative examination of selected cases from the Greek context. The findings indicate that, despite the existence of a regulatory framework and certain organized practices, the Greek case is marked by uneven implementation, infrastructure gaps, limited standardization of procedures, and weaknesses in compliance monitoring.
