Tourism is one of the most important sectors of the global economy, significantly influencing the development of local communities. However, the extensive growth of mass tourism has been associated with considerable environmental and socio-economic pressures, leading to the search for more sustainable forms of tourism development. In this context, alternative tourism has emerged as an approach that emphasizes environmental protection, the promotion of cultural heritage and the active involvement of local communities.
The aim of this study is to examine the impact of alternative forms of tourism on local communities, with particular emphasis on the environmental and economic dimensions of tourism development. The theoretical part of the study presents key forms of alternative tourism, including ecotourism, agritourism, cultural tourism and mountain tourism. The analysis then focuses on the environmental impacts associated with these activities, as well as their economic effects on local communities, such as income and employment generation, support for local entrepreneurship and diversification of economic activity.
The findings of the study indicate that alternative forms of tourism can contribute significantly to the sustainable development of local communities, provided that they are developed through appropriate planning and management. The active participation of locals and the protection of natural and cultural resources are key factors for the long-term sustainability of tourism development.
