This Master’s thesis examines the relationship between innovation and economic
performance in the Greek pharmaceutical industry, with emphasis on the role of
Research and Development (R&D) investments and patent protection. The central
research question investigates whether Greek pharmaceutical firms possess substantial
incentives to innovate, whether R&D investments lead to the production of protected
knowledge, and ultimately whether such activity enhances their commercial
performance.
For this purpose, panel data from seven Greek pharmaceutical companies covering the
period 2014–2024 are employed, and econometric methods including OLS, Fixed
Effects, and Random Effects models are applied. The analysis distinguishes annual
innovation variables from accumulated stocks of knowledge and patents, in order to
capture the dynamic and intertemporal dimension of the innovation process.
The results indicate that R&D investments are positively associated with the sales
performance of Greek pharmaceutical firms. However, no strong direct relationship is
observed between annual innovation output and short-term economic performance. In
contrast, patent stock and knowledge stock emerge as significant determinants of
long-term economic performance, while systematic investment in R&D contributes to
the gradual strengthening of firms’ technological capabilities.
Overall, the findings suggest that the Greek pharmaceutical sector is characterized by
limited risk-taking, and that innovation is not primarily oriented toward radical
originality. Instead, it functions as a mechanism for enhancing stability, credibility,
and firms’ bargaining power within the market.
