The educational voucher system constitutes a funding mechanism that is steadily gaining ground in the contemporary world. Its main purpose is to improve the quality of education by promoting competition among different schools. Through this mechanism, parents are provided with vouchers that can be used to cover part or all of the tuition fees in some or all private schools. In this way, parents are given the opportunity to choose the school they believe best meets their needs. This freedom to determine the educational institution is a key element in achieving the system’s primary goal, as it increases both the size of the demand and the accessibility of educational providers. The voucher system is closely linked to efficiency and freedom of choice. However, it simultaneously raises questions concerning potential negative consequences, such as school segregation. In practice, achieving the goal of improving educational quality proves to be a challenging task, depending on the socioeconomic context of each country. The institutional framework accompanying the voucher system, together with the characteristics of the educational system and the structure of society, constitute decisive factors for the success of such a reform. The aim of this paper is to examine the characteristics of the voucher system through a review of the existing literature and to highlight its positive and negative effects on education. Moreover, understanding the dynamics of the trends that emerge through the introduction of voucher systems is considered crucial, particularly through the study of developed models. Equally important is the exploration of the solutions and alternative policy options offered in each case, as well as the evaluation of their effectiveness in reducing negative consequences. Public support is deemed necessary, both for the democratic integration of the voucher system within the institutional framework and for the further enhancement of the reform within the educational context. The combination of empirical studies with theoretical models illustrates potential methods for designing systems that aim to optimize outcomes in terms of resource allocation and educational results. Furthermore, identifying research gaps is also a significant component of any literature review, as observed deficiencies highlight potential starting points for future investigations. Education, as a key pillar of the prosperity of modern societies, must remain at the forefront of scientific inquiry, continually seeking improved methods of educational provision and socio-economic support.
