This thesis explores the digital transformation in the maritime industry, focusing on the technologies and practices that are reshaping the sector. It aims to provide a comprehensive literature review of technological innovations such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud infrastructures, and Big Data Analytics, and to assess their operational, environmental, and social impacts. Particular emphasis is placed on a case study involving the application of Ansible and the ITIL framework in a shipping company to automate processes and enhance cybersecurity (GTMaritime, 2023; IMO, 2024).
The study also examines the challenges that accompany the transition to a digital environment, including cybersecurity threats, regulatory frameworks (e.g., IMO Maritime Single Window), and human factors (IMO, 2023). Through the literature analysis, the thesis highlights the benefits of digitalization, such as improved efficiency, reduced environmental footprint, and enhanced crew welfare through advanced communication solutions. Finally, it outlines future trends in the maritime sector, such as the development of autonomous ships and the integration of green technologies.
