The maritime shipping industry forms the backbone of global trade and has undergone a profound digital transformation driven by advances in telecommunications and information and communication technologies (ICT). This thesis examines the role of cybersecurity and telecommunications in modern shipping, with particular emphasis on how increased connectivity has enhanced operational efficiency while simultaneously introducing new vulnerabilities. The study begins with an overview of the historical evolution of maritime telecommunications, tracing the transition from analog radio systems to satellite-based and integrated digital communication networks that enable real-time data exchange between vessels, ports, and shore-based operators.
The research analyzes contemporary maritime communication infrastructures, including the types of antennas and satellite systems currently deployed on board commercial vessels, their technical characteristics, and associated costs. It further explores how these systems support critical shipboard functions such as navigation, cargo management, engine monitoring, and compliance with international regulations. Building on this foundation, the thesis investigates cybersecurity challenges at sea, presenting practical examples of cyber incidents affecting shipboard systems, with a specific focus on GPS jamming and spoofing attacks and their operational and safety implications.
My thesis demonstrates how even limited cyberattacks targeting a single vessel or port system can propagate through interconnected supply chains, leading to significant economic losses, safety risks, and disruptions to global trade. Finally, the study assesses the future of ICT infrastructure in the shipping industry, considering emerging technologies such as enhanced satellite communications, autonomous and remotely operated vessels, and integrated cybersecurity frameworks. By highlighting both the opportunities and risks associated with digitalization, this thesis underscores the critical need for resilient telecommunications systems and robust cybersecurity strategies to ensure the safety, reliability, and sustainability of global maritime operations.
