This paper explores secondary school teachers' decisions regarding their soft and hard skills training, through the lens of Behavioral Economics. It highlights the value of continuous teacher training in a complex multicultural environment by analyzing the distinction and complementarity of hard, soft and digital skills. Through the theories of Behavioral Economics, it explains why teachers' choices are not always fully rational. It analyzes the concept of nudges as mild interventions that exploit cognitive biases, while maintaining freedom of choice and libertarian paternalism as the moral and theoretical framework that legitimizes the use of nudges.
The research examined perceptions, preferences and cognitive biases that influence the choices of 151 secondary school teachers across Greece. The findings show that their decisions are not primarily determined by personal factors, but are shaped by social, organizational and institutional constraints, with the school leadership acting as a positive regulator by facilitating participation in training. The results confirm bounded rationality, highlighting the need for training policies that utilize the tools of Behavioral Economics.
