This dissertation examines international investments in port infrastructure and the role
of Greece as a maritime trade hub, focusing on the case study of the Port of Piraeus.
The study aims to analyze how foreign investments contribute to strengthening the
competitiveness and international position of the Greek economy. The theoretical
section presents the main forms of international investments and highlights the
strategic and economic importance of ports globally.
The dissertation outlines the positive impact of Greece’s geographical location and the
historical development of its ports, with particular emphasis on the case of Piraeus
and the investment of COSCO Shipping, which transformed the port into one of the
most important in the Mediterranean. Furthermore, it explores other investments in
Greek ports, such as Thessaloniki and Alexandroupolis, as well as the contribution of
Greek shipping groups like Latsco. Finally, it discusses policy directions focused on
green and digital transition, institutional strengthening, and the sustainable
development of the Greek port system.
