This postgraduate thesis investigates the structure, dynamics, and strategic direction of the
Greek petroleum sector, with a particular focus on HELLENiQ ENERGY. The study begins
with a historical overview of oil as a key global energy resource and traces the evolution of
refining technologies and the regulatory framework governing the Greek petroleum industry. It
assesses the sector's financial performance in 2023, including profitability, investment activity,
and its broader socio-economic contribution.
A comparative case study is conducted between the two leading Greek oil companies—
HELLENiQ ENERGY and Motor Oil Hellas—analyzing their strategic positioning, product
portfolios, and financial indicators. The research highlights HELLENiQ ENERGY’s transition
strategies in response to the global shift towards sustainable energy systems, with emphasis on
renewable energy development, emissions reduction, ESG integration, and digital
transformation.
Furthermore, the thesis presents a detailed financial analysis of HELLENiQ ENERGY over the
period 2020–2024, utilizing key metrics such as revenue evolution, net income, EBITDA,
earnings per share, and balance sheet dynamics. Overall, the study provides a comprehensive
assessment of the sector's transformation amid the energy transition, offering insights into the
challenges and opportunities faced by petroleum enterprises operating in a rapidly evolving
energy landscape.
