The global energy landscape has endured reflective transformations the
recent years, considering urgent concerns which have arisen. Climate change,
which is intricately linked to fossil fueling overdependence or even energy
security crisis, are among the challenges which drive the profound evolution
in the energy industry. Dynamically, the European Union has been engaged in
this transition through motivated legislation and ambitious strategies such as
the European Green Deal. Collective efforts aim to facilitate decarbonization
and simultaneously shape undisrupted and correlated energy systems. The
evolution of Energy Communities has been considered a structural new era
innovation which combines social cohesion and sustainability.
Focusing on Greece, which has been historically dependent to external energy
suppliers and for years have placed lignite production as a principal energy
strategy, the forthcoming European shift on energy related issues, bears
complicated integration challenges. Although facing internal financial and
social uncertainty, Greece demonstrates valuable endeavors to associate with
European energy guidelines. After 2018, with the establishment of Energy
Community legislation and proving support of energy democracy, Greece
oversees both internal and external pressure to properly adjust to a carbonneutral environment while facing energy poverty due to the financial
vulnerable Greek economy and the complex geographical characteristics.
