This thesis concerns the highlighting of the strategic and theoretical thought expressed by Thucydides in the 5th century BC. A thought that has been nurtured and taught throughout the centuries by kings, politicians, military men, and internationalists, as it was and is taught in Universities and Military Academies.
The analysis of my work will be structured in five parts:
The first part will discuss the concepts of war and strategy through the life and personality of Thucydides, as well as the main events that occurred during the Peloponnesian War, so that initially the reader will have a global view of the historian's psyche.
In the second part we will study Thucydides' relationship with realistic politics, its axioms and its types such as classical realism, neoclassical realism, neorealism and their offshoots.
In the third part we will deal with the term and concept of high strategy as well as the role it has played in international relations.
In the fourth part of our work we will study the term of power from the past to the present.
In the fifth part we will examine the extensions and the timelessness of the concept of "Thucydides' trap".
The aim of the thesis is to prove the timelessness of the work, up to our days and its ability to remain a useful guide to political and military rulers, as well as to people in business administration.
The methodology of the project was based on a detailed examination of excerpts from Thucydides' work, as well as a study of the views of contemporary and older internationalists and historians, in order to draw conclusions about how much the work of the Historian has influenced contemporary fields of conflict. According to the opinion of the philosopher Cornelius Castoriadis, "if someone wants to understand what is happening in the world, he has every interest in reading Thucydides"
The results of our research document the clear timelessness of his work, both at a theoretical and practical level, so that this work constitutes the Bible of International Relations.
