The concept of sustainable shipping practices is becoming increasingly vital to addressing the environmental and socio-economic challenges facing the global shipping industry. Being one of the main drivers of international trade, maritime transport is a major contributor to carbon emissions, ocean pollution and the depletion of marine ecosystems. However, the push for sustainability in this sector as well has led to innovative solutions to reduce environmental footprints and ensure long-term ecological protection. Sustainable maritime practices encompass a wide range of strategies, including the adoption of green technologies such as renewable energy sources, cleaner fuels and environmentally friendly vessel design. Additional efforts and mechanisms to improve energy efficiency and waste management are becoming increasingly prominent. The purpose of this paper is to explore and present the current challenges and opportunities in sustainable shipping practices highlighting the importance of policy development and technological advances for a greener shipping industry. Achieving sustainability in maritime transport not only contributes to mitigating climate change but also ensures the preservation of marine ecosystems for future generations.
