This paper explores hydrogen as an energy carrier and as a key factor for Europe’s future energy security, assessing its role in the energy transition towards a more sustainable, carbon-neutral society. By mapping the challenges and prospects of integrating hydrogen into the energy system, the crucial importance of its contribution to the decarbonization of major economic sectors as well as to large-scale energy storage becomes evident. In addition, the thesis critically examines the technical, economic, and environmental dimensions of hydrogen adoption within the framework of the European Union, with particular emphasis on European initiatives and strategies. The findings highlight the need for continuous innovation, strategic investments, and strong policy support to ensure the sustainability of hydrogen as a safe, efficient, and competitive energy solution for Europe’s future.
