This dissertation examines the extent to which vertical integration strategies of liner
shipping companies impact fleet deployment and port selection in the Mediterranean.
Through research and data collection on the five largest Mediterranean ports
(Valencia, Piraeus, Algeciras, Gioia Tauro, Barcelona), and then through a focused
analysis on the three of them that are controlled by liner shipping companies, the
influence and purpose of investments in terminals by major shipping companies such
as COSCO, MSC, and Maersk are being investigated. The study concludes that
vertical integration enhances operational flexibility, affects the distribution of ship
calls, and reshapes the competitiveness of ports.
