Healthcare is one of the most critical and sensitive sectors of society, where changes in infrastructure, equipment, and human resources are continuous and rapid. Within this context, the role of the “healthcare provider” has evolved: physicians are no longer perceived solely as clinical practitioners, but also as potential managers. The shift from individual medical practice to organized hospital systems has highlighted the need for leadership that integrates both clinical expertise and managerial skills.
This dissertation seeks to explore the challenges and opportunities arising from physicians’ involvement in managerial roles. Through a literature-based analysis, it identifies the benefits—such as credibility, in-depth knowledge of the clinical environment, and the improvement of service quality—while also acknowledging the limitations, including the lack of managerial competencies and the difficulty of balancing the dual role of physician–manager.
The contribution of this study lies in synthesizing international insights and situating them within the Greek healthcare context, emphasizing the need for institutional support, management education, and the development of hybrid models of healthcare governance. The findings underscore that empowering physicians in leadership positions can constitute a strategic advantage for the National Health System, provided it is accompanied by appropriate policies and cultural change.
