Greece faces significant challenges in maintaining an adequate and safe blood supply due to ineffective promotional methods, reliance on traditional approaches, and insufficient use of modern communication channels. Low donor participation is hindered by safety concerns, misconceptions about the donation process, and a general lack of awareness.
An analysis of the current strategies used by the National Blood Donation Centre (NBC) reveals that they are not cost-effective and fail to address the motivations and concerns of potential donors. International best practices suggest that alternative blood collection methods, such as mobile donation units, community partnerships, and the integration of technology, can enhance accessibility and convenience, leading to increased donor participation.
Non-material incentives like recognition, appreciation, and a sense of social contribution enhance the willingness to donate. Emphasizing personal benefits and benevolence, addressing safety concerns through education, utilizing social media and digital platforms, improving the donor experience, fostering community engagement, and implementing tailored recruitment strategies are effective approaches to revitalizing blood donation efforts. Non-material incentives remain decisive, however, well-designed low-intensity financial incentives can, according to studies, increase participation when implemented on a pilot basis, and with strict safety and ethical safeguards
By adopting these innovative practices and focusing on donor motivations, Greece can enhance its blood donation system, ensuring a stable and safe blood supply that meets healthcare needs. This approach will improve public health outcomes and foster a culture of voluntary blood donation across the country.
