This thesis focuses on the study of factors associated with dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s
disease, using data from the SHARE project (Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in
Europe). The aim of the study is to identify demographic, medical, social, and psychological
parameters that may act either as risk factors or as protective factors. The analysis was initially
conducted using descriptive statistics and bivariate associations, followed by logistic
regression models to estimate the odds ratios of dementia occurrence. Furthermore, alternative
predictive models were compared using criteria such as sensitivity, specificity, and ROC
analysis, in order to assess their predictive performance. The results highlight the importance
of both modifiable and non-modifiable factors, with emphasis on age, comorbidities, and
cognitive reserve. The dissertation concludes with suggestions for future research, including
the integration of genetic data and the application of advanced dimension reduction techniques
and survival analysis in longitudinal settings.
