This thesis explores the implementation of the best interests of the child principle within the
asylum procedure, focusing on unaccompanied children on the move. In recent years, due to the
mass arrival of third-country nationals with Greece being a first country of reception, there has
been an increase in the number of children arriving in the country, many of whom are
unaccompanied or become unaccompanied after their arrival. Drawing upon international,
European, and national legal frameworks, the study highlights significant gaps in addressing the
needs of child asylum seekers. Emphasis is placed on the interview stage, where significant
challenges in implementing the best interests of the child are highlighted: lack of a childcentered approach, linguistic and cultural barriers, as well as limited recognition of children's
vulnerability. The study, based on qualitative analysis of interviews and the use of quantitative
data, the study reveals the disconnect between legal theory and the practical application of child
protection principles. Through the development of the theoretical framework regarding
unaccompanied children, the paper approaches them as active agents who develop hybrid
identities situated in a liminal socio-spatial context that challenges Western norms of childhood.
The findings call for child-sensitive asylum procedures, improved professional training, and the
adoption of participatory mechanisms to uphold children's rights and prioritize their well-being.
