In this thesis, which consists of a bibliographical study, an attempt is made to describe the general characteristics of gold and gold coins, the history of gold and gold coins from the depths of the centuries until today, the general picture of the gold market, its price and the factors that affect it. An important reference is made to how the price of gold and gold coins was affected by the recent Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on the global economy. Apart from unforeseen health and social events, other factors affecting the gold price such as inflation, exchange rates, supply and demand of other precious metals and that of oil are also discussed. In order to analyse the state of a country's economy, the quantity of gold and other precious metal reserves should be analysed. For this reason, foreign countries with large reserves such as the USA, India, Japan, Germany, Switzerland and the situation in Greece are analysed. More specifically, the legal framework and its relation to the purchase and sale of gold in Greece since 1927, when the Bank of Greece was founded until today and the purchase and sale of gold pounds by the Bank of Greece in the SAP system is presented in detail.
