The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the role of ICS in modern shipping, with particular emphasis on the importance of training for effective emergency management.
Initially, the evolution and adaptation of ICS to the needs of the maritime industry are presented, since it was originally developed for responding to natural disasters on land. Subsequently, the structure, functions and importance of ICS in the maritime sector are analysed. Furthermore, the necessity of implementing ICS in the European Union is highlighted, taking into account the existing threats and the benefits of ensuring maritime safety. Additionally, the crisis management and risk response mechanisms in Greece is examined, while emphasis is placed on the advantages and disadvantages of ICS, as well as the challenges faced by shipping companies in the training of their personnel. Finally, best practices and recommendations are identified to improve the implementation of ICS and enhance the effective management of emergency incidents in the marine environment. The study highlights the importance of safety at sea, upgrading the quality of maritime services and protecting the environment.
