Despite that shipping is the environmentally friendliest transportation sector, more efforts are required, especially from the port side due to the high sensitivity of the surrounding area, as residents receive externalities. This thesis examines emissions reduction pathways, focusing on shore power supply to ships at berth. Data related to the contribution of shipping in air pollution is presented. Moreover, the emissions reduction potential by plugging-in ships at berth is being discussed. Energy efficiency measures are necessary in order to decrease fuel use. Although, aiming to a carbon neutral economy by 2050, stricter measures need to be taken. Despite that shipping is the environmentally friendliest transportation sector, more efforts are required, especially from the port side due to the high sensitivity of the surrounding area, as residents receive externalities. The aim of this thesis is to examine how the shore powering of ships in ports can reduce the greenhouse gas emissions, especially in coastal areas, as they will not consume fossil fuels during their stay. The technology has started being improved, while port facilities do not only act as gates of global trade but as energy hubs, too, shaping the future of shipping. In the majority of the cases, ships use their auxiliary engines to meet the needs of electricity when idle. This means that ships continue to emit pollutants.
