The purpose of this thesis is to review ESG principles, their adherence and implementation by Greek-owned shipping companies, and their importance for their sustainable financing. The global shipping industry is increasingly pressured to decarbonize and align with ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance) principles to meet new environmental and social challenges.
Greek shipping, as a leading force in the global shipping industry, is under increasing stress to adapt to ESG principles. This adaptation is not just a future possibility but a current necessity for the industry to remain competitive. This paper explores the effects of this adaptation and how ships, companies, and institutions in the industry can navigate this new reality.
Additionally, the study looks at environmental parameters such as carbon emissions and innovative technologies for greener shipping, social impacts (working conditions and diversity), and the crucial role of good governance in promoting transparency and accountability. This emphasis on governance standards is intended to reassure the audience about the ethical standards in the industry.
Consequently, the research concludes that the effective integration of ESG principles in the Greek maritime sector has the potential to significantly enhance its sustainable development, thus making it more resilient and consistent with future international norms.
