This master thesis aims to present the great importance of the sanctions compliance expertise in ship management companies due to the increasing and evolving complexity of the international financial sanctions programs in the past few decades. For the purpose of this thesis I will examine the sanctions imposed by the European Union, the United Kingdom, The United States and the United Nations against Iran, North Korea, Russia, Belarus, Venezuela, Syria and Cuba. I will also highlight the recommended structure of an efficient sanctions compliance program as recommended by the abovementioned competent authorities, the possible indicators suggesting sanctions breach, as well as the possible outcomes of an ineffective sanctions program leading to a sanctions violation. Lastly, I will also describe case studies of sanctions violations and enforcement, which support the essentiality of a robust sanctions compliance program in order to prevent legal, financial, operational or reputational consequences.
