In the current international context, the field of financial technology and sustainable
development have come to know rapid growth. Suggestions that FinTech services can help
achieve sustainability led to a series of studies relating to financial technology’s influence on
sustainable development. These studies confirm that, not only financial technology has a
positive impact on sustainability, but, also, leads to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions,
and grants access to financial services for more individuals and businesses, improving their
financial inclusion. This paper investigates the relationship between financial technology and
sustainability from the consumers’ perspective, focusing on environmental and social
sustainability. The data were derived from 152 answers of Greek consumers over 18 years old
living in Athens in September 2023. The results indicate that consumers are aware of the
positive impact of financial technology on sustainability and agree that FinTech can lead to
carbon footprint’s reduction. Furthermore, they believe that the adoption of those technological
innovations negatively influences the financial inclusion of the elderly that struggle to use them,
while, simultaneously, support that financial technology has improved their quality of life. This
research practically contributes to the relevant literature by considering the relationship
between financial technology and sustainability from the consumers’ perspective and by
analyzing the standpoint of the elderly’s financial inclusion.
