Global trade is directly dependent on maritime transport services as only by sea is it possible to transport cargo on a scale that meets the needs of the worldwide demand. The main purpose of the following study is to understand the strategic decisions to be taken by the entrepreneur operating in the maritime transport industry, more correctly referred to as a shipowner, depending on the trend of the shipping business cycle.
The study is structured in two parts, the first part consists of two chapters in which the theoretical review is presented, where extensive reference is made to the four shipping markets and their individual characteristics and to the shipping cycle, its characteristics as well as its history. The second part consists of two chapters and the conclusions, in the first chapter of the second part follows the study of three case studies of shipping companies and the main strategic choices followed over the years during its long presence in the shipping industry. While in the second follows a study of the market for the last five years based on statistical analysis in order to understand the impact of the fluctuations of the shipping cycle on the secondhand and new-building markets. Finally, the conclusions drawn from this study help to understand the factors that drive a shipowner to make investment decisions to increase profitability based on the course of the shipping cycle.
