The introduction of technology in the shipping industry is set to open a new era and lead to new paradigms in terms of safety, economy and environmental protection. However, there are also some concerns about new technology that may also create new types of risks, such as cyber security risks and ethical issues. This paper presents the recent trends for the development of smart ships with the introduction of the most advanced technologies that increase the autonomy and "green" nature of ships. It also explores the effects of vessel autonomy on key issues such as safety, economics, energy conservation, employment and education, as well as legal and ethical issues, in order to find a solution for an efficient, reliable, safe and sustainable shipping in the near future. Applying holistic approaches to technology development, regulatory framework, communication and multi-stakeholder collaboration based on mutual understanding is critical to the success of smart ships.
