The present assignment aims to analyze the functions and operational context of the classification societies in the shipping industry and to demonstrate their importance with regards to achieving vessels’ seaworthiness.
Reference is made to the relevant certifications and the procedure followed for their issuance as well as to the presentation of the rules, including international conventions and international regulations with which those conducting the relevant inspections and controls must comply.
In parallel, special emphasis is placed on the fact that the consistent monitoring and observance of the procedures governing the inspections ultimately lead to the achievement of safety both in the field of protecting human life and in the field of protecting the marine environment by avoiding accidents and pollution as well as ensuring protection of the economy and duration of the equipment, resulting to the extension of the life of the vessel.
In addition, the assignment sets out the procedure followed for granting the relevant certifications to the ship, as well as what happens when such certifications are not obtained at some stage during the ship's construction and the significance of such non-compliance.
Finally, information on the most important classification societies are provided, including the Hellenic Register of Shipping, with special reference to their major functions.
