The phenomenon of migration is a long-standing issue of concern to all European countries.
Although this topic seems to have been studied extensively in the bibliography, there has been
limited research activity involving the gender variable. It is a crucial variable in the process of
studying the migration phenomenon, the lack of which has major consequences, particularly for
women, as it is a main source of discrimination. It was therefore considered appropriate for this
thesis to focus on the feminization of migration and in particular on women as economic migrants.
Starting with the necessary overview of the historical background and important terms such as
gender, migration and the identity of the ''foreigner'', we proceed to analyses the feminization of
migration in an attempt to approach and link the movement of any individual, gender and the social
exclusion of the migrant woman in the host country. Additionally, we present the legislative
framework of migration in the EU, the efforts to feminize the gender issue and the implication of
good practices in migration policies. For this reason, in the last part, integration programmes for
female migrants that were developed by countries such as Sweden, Italy and Germany were used
as examples.
