One of the four shipping markets is the ship breaking market which is often
referred to as the recycling industry. The operation process of this market is broadly
similar to the second-hand market, but the final buyers of the ships are the scrap yards
that dismantle the ships. A shipowner sells ships that have completed their operational
life cycle, usually to brokers who resell them to agents of the scrap yards. Most of
these yards are located in the Far East (eg India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and China).
Ship breaking prices depend on the demand for iron ore. The break-up market follows the shipping market cycles. As the working conditions in terms of safety and hygiene
in the dismantling yards and the fact that the breaking up of ships is a process with an
extremely high environmental burden, the International Maritime Organization
adopted the regulations agreed in Hong Kong in 2009 to limit environmental pollution
, but also the improvement of working conditions in the shipyards. However, there are
particular problems in this particular market that affect the global community. The
work attempts to highlight these problems and how they are dealt with by the agencies
involved.
