The purpose of this study is to analyze the phenomenon of piracy against ship personnel. Piracy began almost simultaneously with the development of maritime trade, which to this day poses a significant risk to seafarers. The study provides an overview of this phenomenon and a general reference to the types of ships, the departments that make up the shipping company and how they are managed. It also presents the types of pirates, their modus operandi and the tactics they use. The factors leading to the establishment of the pirate regime and the main areas of pirate activity are then analyzed. In addition, all the consequences caused by piracy in various sectors such as the economy, tourism, direct indirect costs and who is affected by piracy are mentioned. Finally, ways and measures to counter piracy are proposed to reduce the risk of attacks.
