This thesis examines the dynamics of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Romania, with particular emphasis on the case of Alpha Bank. The paper is structured in seven main sections, which cover various aspects related to FDI and its determinants in the Romanian context. The importance of FDI in promoting economic growth is highlighted and the relevance of studying FDI in the Romanian context is explored. The study delves into the theoretical foundations of FDI, defining its main components and exploring the different types of FDI. It also focuses on the determinants of FDI in EU countries, drawing on empirical evidence to identify the factors influencing FDI flows. Particular attention is paid to the specific case of South East European (SEE) countries and the impact of EU integration on FDI. The paper examines Romania's transition process and the challenges it faces in the context of EU integration. It explores the reform programme and the business environment in Romania, with a particular focus on privatisation and the FDI framework. An in-depth analysis of the evolution of FDI inflows to Romania is provided. It also explores the determinants of FDI in Romania and examines the presence and role of Greek banks, including Alpha Bank, in the Romanian market. It offers a comprehensive overview of the bank's history, evolution and financial performance. In addition, it examines Alpha Bank's FDI activities in Romania, including their strategies, challenges and contribution to the Romanian banking sector.
