Abstract
In February 2006, the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006) was adopted by
the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in the run-up to the International Maritime
Conference. By unanimous agreement of the Special Tripartite Commission, the
provisions of the MLC, 2006 for the protection of seafarers' rights came into force. The
Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, is also considered as the "fourth pillar" of the
International Maritime Organization (IMO), reinforcing the existing legislative
framework. The structure of the MLC, 2006 is designed to ensure decent working
conditions and an environment of equal opportunities for all seafarers. The means of
monitoring its implementation and the sanctions imposed on its Member States and
shipowning or operating companies are aimed at ensuring continued compliance with the
regulations set out in the MLC, 2006. In this dissertation, the Maritime Labour
Convention, 2006 is extensively analyzed and particular attention is given to the
Regulations relating to the welfare of crews. In addition, a questionnaire analysis is done
where the degree of job satisfaction of seafarers is studied through primary data. The aim
of this study is to draw conclusions about the welfare of seafarers and whether they
actually feel satisfied with the implementation of MLC, 2006 as it has been developed to
date.
