The issue addressed in this dissertation is related to piracy and the human factor, a phenomenon that affects shipping and international trade ceaselessly.
Specifically, in the first chapter, the definition of piracy will be mentioned, and a distinction will be made between the different categories of piracy, pirates, while also emphasizing their actions.
The second chapter concerns the geographical distribution and the separation of the areas considered high and low risk. Then, pirate attacks, hostage conditions, and death of the crews will be documented which have an impact on the workforce of the ship and which events have taken place in different parts of the world.
In the third chapter, the causes, and effects due to the actions of the pirates will be examined. In the first analysis, the effects on seafarers on a professional and psychological level will be identified, and in the second analysis, the negative effect of the phenomenon on a shipping company will be explored.
In the fourth chapter we will assess the legal dimension of piracy. There will be a thorough description of the measures, laws, and regulations (on national and international level) that have been used to regulate this phenomenon.
In the fifth chapter, measures to prevent, suppress and deal with piracy will be proposed, measures which must be taken by a shipping company and by the crew manning a ship.
In the sixth chapter, conclusions will be drawn on the issue.
