The purpose of the thesis is to present the corporate and competitive strategies of the shipping industry along with their application to Greek companies. The first chapter underscores the types of corporate and competitive strategies, as well as the traits of competition in the shipping industry which can be further explained by Porter’s five competitive forces and strategy models.
In the second chapter, an analysis is made of the particular characteristics that make shipping, stand out from the rest of the economic sectors. Particular emphasis is placed on the shipping variability, which is categorized into shipping cycles, unexpected and expected events, and globalization.
In the third chapter, the thesis completes the analytical framework regarding the types of corporate strategy in relation to market, product development, vertical and horizontal integration, as well as related and unrelated differentiation. The fourth chapter examines the competitive strategies of overall cost leadership, differentiation and focus. Examples of Greek shipowners are highlighted and references are made to Greek shipping companies to present how the strategies have been implemented. Finally, shipping cost is dissected to its components regarding the cost leadership strategy.
