The world is rapidly moving towards a global agenda driven by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals imply a path towards sustainable development and solar energy and can play a facilitator in this transition. The best-known way of harnessing age-related energy are the so-called photovoltaic cells or solar panels and the development of photovoltaics is projected to be worldwide accelerated in the upcoming years. This applies, both to mega projects with multi-billion dollar investments and small solar systems installed in private homes, industrial plants, commercial facilities and so on. The European Green Deal, seems to take this recommendation on board, proposing a policy agenda for the EU to become climate neutral in 2050 and inherently transform society and the economy into a more sustainable direction. Although, the goal of a climate neutral European continent was already articulated in the Paris Agreement, many Commission officials consider the EU Green Deal as an unprecedented change in European policies because it covers most sectors and all the policy areas are aligned under one goal. In this thesis we seek to study the penetration of PV in EU countries, as a factor in achieving sustainable development goals.
