The purpose of this thesis is to highlight the evolutionary process of the EMU in the light of
optimum currency areas. For this purpose, the pre-existing bibliography and articles were studied
and recorded. The criteria of optimum currency areas were analyzed based on which the
European edifice was evaluated. At the same time, the Maastricht Treaty and the Stability and
Growth Pact were outlined through the historical archive of the European Union, as well as the
weaknesses presented by the general institutional framework in the face of repeated crises.
Moreover, there is an extensive description of the efforts to restructure the fiscal framework
during multiple crises with the adoption of many reforms. Finally, the literature review closes
with specific proposals, which will strengthen the competitiveness of the European Union and
promote the further convergence of economies.
