Local self-government, its mode of operation and its efficiency in Greece, are a permanent topic of discussion and reflection. Local government organizations, although they display many characteristics like those of private sector organizations, they also display important particularities. The main question that concerns the local self-government bodies and the central government officials, as well as ordinary citizens, is whether and to what extent we have a clear picture of the financial position of the Municipalities. This is a primary and necessary step not only to identify the state of the municipalities, but also to be able to formulate policy to improve the functions of the municipalities, and by extension the benefits to the citizens.
This paper is a brief attempt to approximate the financial position of three municipalities using numerical indicators. One of the most serious limitations we faced in our research was the difficulty in finding published data on the country's municipalities. Unfortunately, most municipalities in the country do not have their financial data published or updated. Despite the limited access we had to financial data, we reached specific and clear conclusions regarding the financial position of the municipalities under study. Although the municipalities we selected had different characteristics, we found as a common element the high liquidity and low investment activity of the municipalities.
